Goal 1

Secure Ownership of The Phinney Neighborhood Center - Completed Feb. 2009

After nearly three decades as tenants, we had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to purchase the Phinney Neighborhood Center property from the Seattle School District. While they agreed to work with us first, the District would have offered the property to developers if we were unable to purchase it. In February, 2009, our vision became a reality, thanks to funding from the City and State.

As owners, we will:
  • Ensure the Phinney Neighborhood Center remains in the hands of the community.
  • Guarantee the preservation of this landmarked site and buildings.

Goal 2

Improve Accessibility to All Areas

A lack of elevators and access ramps makes it difficult, and sometimes impossible, for some people to enjoy the full range of activities the Center has to offer. Once the necessary capital improvements are made, everyone, regardless of his or her physical challenges, will be able to enjoy all aspects of the Phinney Neighborhood Center.

Access improvements that will be made include:
  • Elevators and access ramps for both buildings.
  • Restrooms and classrooms that meet ADA standards.
  • A new accessible entrance for each building.
  • Landscaped access pathways between the buildings.

Goal 3

Enhance Community Gathering Spaces

Creating a gracious, park-like connection between the two buildings of the Phinney Neighborhood Center will unite the spaces into a campus that will transform the Center’s prominent corner lot into a distinctive neighborhood gathering place.

These new gathering places will include:
  • Attractive green spaces between the two buildings, including small plazas with seating and gardens.
  • A new hillside playscape for kids.
  • Environmentally-friendly landscaping improvements, including permeable surfaces for absorbing rainwater.
  • An expanded lobby in the wooden building, providing community members with a new meeting space.

Goal 4

Ensure the Efficiency and Safety of the Site

As tenants, we were unable to address significant deferred maintenance items. Owning the site would enable us to make these important capital improvements and undertake them in the most environmentally sustainable ways possible.

Improvements will include:
  • Replacing the decomposing roof on the brick building.
  • Earthquake retrofitting of the wooden building.
  • New outdoor lighting to ensure nighttime safety as well as enhance the beauty of exterior gathering spaces.
  • A site-wide rainwater management solution to expand the existing catchment system.
  • Replacing a major sewer line.
  • Zonal heating and cooling in the Community Hall in the brick building.
