Phinney Neighborhood Association Newsletter—Volume 29, Issue 4, April 2009

It’s official! We are happy to announce that on February 27, the PNA became the official owner of the Phinney Neighborhood Center site, after 29 years of leasing the property from the Seattle School District. Thank you to the City of Seattle and the State of Washington for providing the funding for the purchase. Thanks also to the volunteer committee who worked for months negotiating the deal: Rhoda Lawrence, Alan Kirtley, Matt Knox, Janet Strand Selby, Mark Blatter, Marco Lowe, Andrew Parker and John Smith.

To celebrate, we’re planning a community party on
Sunday, June 28.
Mark your calendars now.

And finally, now that we own the site, we can begin to move forward with some exciting plans for increasing accessibility and enhancing gathering spaces in the buildings and on the grounds. For details, check the website.

Phinney Reads

On Monday, April 20, author Jim Lynch will read from and discuss his book, The Highest Tide, for Phinney Reads. In this poignant coming of age tale, a precocious boy has a summer in which inexplicable things keep happening and he’s trying to make sense of it with the help of a marine biologist, a mystical lady and his own clear-headed observations. Lynch will be here at 7:30 p.m. in Room 6 of the Blue Building. Santoro’s Books, at 7405 Greenwood Ave N, is offering a 15% discount on the book. For more information, contact Chardell at (206)783-2244.

Thank You Volunteers!

April is National Volunteer Month and we'd like to thank everyone who shares the gift of their time to support the PNA all year long. Whether you are a co-op parent, serve at the soup kitchen or overflow shelter, put in long hours on the Board or a committee, volunteer during our many events, teach a class, or help keep our building and grounds looking good, we really appreciate all that you do. The Phinney Neighborhood Association wouldn't be the same without you!

Volunteers Needed

It’s spring and Heart of Phinney Park, at the intersection of Phinney/Greenwood and N. 67th Street, is ready for some TLC. We're looking for volunteers willing to spend a few hours each month weeding, deadheading, picking up litter and keeping things looking good. These independent gardeners, dubbed Pacemakers, work on their own schedules following a brief orientation. You are also invited to join us for a work party on Saturday, April 18 from 10 am - 1 pm. Email judith@phinneycenter.org to RSVP for the work party or to schedule a Pacemaker walk-through.

If you've recently experienced a change in your work situation, we would love to benefit from some of your extra time and energy. Skilled volunteers are needed to take on a number of special projects. Most projects are ideal for workers who'd like to take ownership of the project outcome. Contact judith@phinneycenter.org for a list of opportunities and to set up a meeting to discuss your skills.

Phinney Farmers Market

Mark your calendars for Friday, May 29, when the Phinney Farmers Market will begin the summer season. While you wait for luscious berries, crisp greens, and lovely Friday afternoons eating and visiting with neighbors, you can help choose the art for this year's market merchandise. Between April 20 and May 1 you will be able to vote on the designs submitted through a design contest. Just log on to the Phinney Farmers Market web page to see the finalists and cast your vote. If you just can't wait, stop by the PNC and pick up a market t-shirt from 2007 or 2008 - they're on sale! We're also looking for volunteers to act as PNA Ambassadors on market days, sharing info about PNA programs and events and selling market merchandise. For details, contact judith@phinneycenter.org.

Moulin Rouge Auction

On May 2, the Blue Building and a large tent in the upper parking lot will be transformed into a fanciful bohemian Moulin Rouge. Join us for the PNA’s biggest fundraising party of the year. The auction is always fun and, with your help, it will be a fabulous success!

Invitations are in the mail so gather a group of friends and get your reservations early. Tickets cost $50 per person or $75 for patrons. Hot items you’ll want to bid on include a variety of getaways, a pony party, custom wedding photography, Zoo Tunes season tickets, a rooftop party, a sunset cruise, gourmet dinners, a custom made guitar, classes, services from PNA members and restaurant gift certificates. If you need a form or have a question about a donation, let us know.

Help us turn the Phinney Neighborhood Center into Moulin Rouge. We can use your leftover Christmas lights, oriental carpets, or call us if you have other French themed items you would be willing to lend us for the evening.

Since 1980, the Phinney Neighborhood Association has invested time and money in building and strengthening our neighborhood by providing and promoting a variety of programs and activities aimed at connecting neighbors and fostering involvement in our community.

Over the years, thousands of neighbors, near and far, have joined in these efforts creating a unique neighborhood center that is home to countless events, classes, community meetings, preschool and childcare resources, a tool lending library, soup kitchens, a senior center and an art gallery.
Make an investment in the future of your neighborhood. Membership forms the cornerstone of the Association and is vital to our success. Join today.
