Home Design & Remodel Fair

House

The 12th annual Home Design & Remodel Fair will be held on Sunday, February 8 at the Phinney Neighborhood Center. This event offers a wealth of ideas to help you make the most of your home and save money on operations and maintenance.
While you may not be revving up for an extravagant remodel right away, the best projects result from plenty of research and investigation of design ideas and materials choices. At the Home Fair, you’ll find plenty of inspiration in the form of architects, designers, remodel and specialty contractors, tradespeople, and suppliers of all manner of home-improvement materials and furnishings. Many business and non-profit exhibitors put a premium on sustainable remodeling practices and the newest “green building” products.
City of Seattle Department of Planning & Development permit specialists will be available to answer your questions, provide reference materials, and give an overview of requirements for your prospective project.

Presentations by the experts will be held in Room 3 and include time for questions and answers.
10:30 Green Remodeling: Maximize sustainability and minimize waste.
11:10 Expand Up or Down? Create livable space in your basement or attic.
11:50 Paint & Color: Add new life to your home without breaking the bank.
12:30 Maximizing Hot Water Efficiency: Explore hot water options.
1:10 Financing Your Remodel in a Down Economy: Get an overview of loan availability.
1:50 Household Emergency Preparedness: Learn simple ways to be "disaster ready" at home.
2:20 Working with an Architect: Hear how to select an architect and what to expect.
3:10 Choosing & Hiring a Contractor: Who are you trusting with the keys to your home?

Thank you to our major sponsors HomeStreet Bank, Jackson Remodeling LLC, and Keystone Windows & Doors, as well as co-sponsors George W. Johnson Realtors, Greenwood TrueValue Hardware, and KPLU National Public Radio. A special thanks to all the exhibitors who donated door prizes.
The Home Fair runs from 10 am to 4 pm on Sunday, February 8 at 6532 Phinney Avenue N. Admission is $6 for current PNA members and $9 for the general public. Children 12 and under are admitted free. Contact Judith@phinneycenter.org to volunteer.

PNA Wine Taste

On February 28 the PNA’s 19th annual Wine Taste offers a great opportunity to compare terrific wines while socializing with friends and neighbors. The event includes your choice of ten tastes of wine, delicious hors d’oeuvres from Bill Drummond Catering and swinging jazz performed by Randy Rush and his band. New this year is a wine store offering participants an opportunity to purchase some of the wine that they have enjoyed at the event.

Sponsored by Ballard Market, the event includes wines from the following - Airfield Estates Winery, Animale, Chatter Creek, Dunham Cellars, Eaton Hill, Lopez Island Vineyards, Masset Winery, milbrandt vineyards, Oshea-Scarborough, Portalis Wine Shop, Side Door, Sleight of Hand Cellars, SSCC’s Northwest Wine Academy, Trust Cellars, Two Mountain Winery, The Vineyard Wine Shop, Windy Point Vineyards and Yamhill Valley Vineyards.

Tickets cost $25 for PNA members and $30 for the general public. Designated Driver tickets cost $10. Tickets are available at the Phinney Neighborhood Center or online. This is one of our favorite fundraisers, and we hope you’ll join us in raising your glass to toast the PNA and enjoy an evening of fun! Thank you to our sponsor, Ballard Market and all the Wine Taste participants who are donating the wine for this event. Thanks also to Terry Lundmark for the poster design and printing.

Thank You Volunteers!

During the PNA Annual Meeting it was our pleasure to recognize the work of many volunteers over the past year. The purchase negotiating team of Alan Kirtley, Matt Knox and Janet Selby share the designation of "Volunteers of the Year" for their tireless and successful work negotiating a purchase and sale agreement with the Seattle School District. John Smith received thanks for his leadership as President of the PNA Board of Directors for the past two years and as chair of the Capital Campaign Committee. Angela Fleet received kudos as the creator of the Ridge Romp family entertainment series and Greg Trudeau was honored as an "Acquisitions Ace" for his reliability as a finder of obscure and possibly useful objects for PNA staff members.

In 2008 the PNA recorded a total of 25,725 hours given by 1,067 volunteers in support of PNA events and programs. We thank you all for the time and energy you have shared with us!

On Martin Luther King Day we benefited from the efforts of a group of volunteers from the UW chapter of the Foundation for International Understanding Through Students. They did a terrific job helping with various buildings and grounds projects.

Sponsor a PNA Event

Interested in increasing your visibility in the community? Consider sponsoring one of the many PNA events. Sponsorship helps underwrite the cost of the event so that more fundraising dollars can go directly to support PNA programs. We are looking for sponsors for the PNA Auction, PNA Home & Garden Tour and Greenwood Garage Sale Day. For more information contract chardell@phinneycenter.org.

Call for Artists

Mystery Book Exchange

Join fellow sleuths at the Mystery Book Exchange on February 14, 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Bring your gently used mystery books and trade them for mysteries you have not yet solved. If you don’t have books to trade, you can purchase books for a nominal amount. For more information, email chardell@phinneycenter.org or call (206) 783-2244.

Auction

Mark your calendar now for May 2 and plan your trip to Moulin Rouge for the PNA’s biggest fundraising party of the year. Celebrate the joie de vivre of the Moulin Rouge and our community as we transform the Blue Building and a large tent in the upper parking lot into a bohemian arena. We’re sending an auction donation letter to all our members next week and we hope you will consider making a donation to this year’s event. The success of the auction depends on the quality of the donations we receive. If you don’t have an item to donate, please consider making a cash donation to help underwrite auction expenses so that more of the money raised can directly benefit PNA programs. If you or your company would like to be an auction sponsor, there are many levels of participation. For more information or for additional donation forms, call Mary Lee or Chardell at (206) 783-2244 or email marylee@phinneycenter.org.

Phil Fenner instructs you in "How to survive the end of conventional TV broadcasting as we've always known it." If you don't have cable or satellite or a new TV with a digital tuner (or if one of your TVs is the old-fashioned kind), and you'd like to start getting the new "DTV" signals over the air for free with just a converter box, we'll discuss the options and help you sort out the hype from the facts. Avoid the obvious pitfalls and start enjoying free digital television! Class is free in Room 3 of the Phinney Neighborhood Center Tuesday, February 10 7 - 8 p.m. Call (206) 783-2244 to register.
