We Want Your Opinion

Help us choose a theme for a new mural coming to the Phinney Neighborhood Center parking lot. A community group of Mars Hill Church is generously sponsoring this project. Volunteer artist Priscilla Neilson has created three different themes (part of one design is shown above) and we’re inviting you to help us choose among them. Cast your vote by the end of June, then keep your eyes on the retaining wall in the coming months and see the change occur! If you're interested in joining an off-site work party to help paint the new mural later this summer, please contact Judith Wood and we'll let you know when and where the work will take place.

Home & Garden Thanks

Thank you to everyone who helped make the PNA’s Home & Garden Tour such a success! The event raised over $6600 for PNA programs and activities. Thank you to our sponsors – Northwest Homecrafters, Peoples Bank, Swanson’s and Ecohaus. Thanks also to our advertisers, to Robynne Raye and Modern Dog for poster design and implementation, to Karen Seymour and all the artists who participated in the Art Sale, to the Home and Garden Tour Committee members, to all 57 volunteers and a very special thank you to the homeowners and gardeners for sharing their homes and gardens with us.

Phinney Farmers Market

On July 24 there will be a special cooking demonstration or tasting event. Remember, there is entertainment at the market each week from 4-6 p.m. (performers are listed in our calendar sidebar). Be sure to stop by and visit the friendly PNA Ambassadors who staff our blue tent each week. They’ll stamp your market passport and tell you about upcoming events and will also be happy to sell you a sturdy canvas shopping bag or stylish t-shirt. We still have a few volunteer openings, contact Judith Wood if you’d like to help on Fridays from 4:15-7:15 p.m.

Volunteer Thanks

Thank you to everyone who helped with the Community Celebration in June. We couldn’t put on events like this without so many dedicated volunteers. Our thanks also go out to three recent teams of volunteers who put in hours of gardening and work on our facilities recently. Heart of Phinney Park got lots of attention on Seattle Works Day, with follow-up by members of Emanuel Bible Church. The Northgate office of Windermere Real Estate provided us with a wonderful team who took on a number of projects. We're always happy to match individuals or groups with service opportunities at the PNA! Contact Judith Wood if you'd like to get involved.

Help Wanted

We are looking for someone who can work five hours on Friday afternoon doing gardening, grounds care and assisting with the set-up for the farmers market. They would also need to be available to troubleshoot problems for the market and service the restrooms if needed. This is a position that runs concurrent with the market and ends at the end of September. The position pays $15/ hour. Contact Bill Fenimore or call (206) 783-2244.

PNA Kids! is also rolling out another great summer for kids 5-12 years in our Summer Safari program with two locations - Phinney Neighborhood Center and Whittier Elementary. Community Gardening: from Victory Gardens
to P-Patches

During many periods in history, urban agriculture has helped solve food security issues while producing local, nutritious food for all. Come to the Greenwood Senior Center on Tuesday, July 14 at 2 p.m. to learn about community gardening movements, including reflections on the wartime victory gardens, information about Seattle’s P-Patch program and ways to support the development of a P-Patch in our neighborhood. Contact Jenny for more information: (206) 297-0875.

Volunteer at the Aurora Community Garden

In April, Awake Church began a community garden with the hopes of beautifying Aurora, providing food for community meals and, most importantly, bringing people together. Meet at the Greenwood Senior Center on Tuesday July 21 and 28 at 2 p.m., and we’ll head over to the garden for a couple hours of gardening fun! No previous gardening experience is required. Contact Jenny for more information: (206) 297-0875.

BUILDING COMMUNITY IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD

Strong vibrant neighborhoods don’t just happen. They’re the result of years of hard work and effort. Since 1980, the Phinney Neighborhood Association has invested time and money in building and strengthening our neighborhood by providing and promoting a variety of programs and activities aimed at connecting neighbors and fostering involvement in our community.

Over the years, thousands of neighbors, near and far, have joined in these efforts creating a unique neighborhood center that is home to countless events, classes, community meetings, preschool and childcare resources, a tool lending library, soup kitchens, a senior center and an art gallery.
Make an investment in the future of your neighborhood. Membership forms the cornerstone of the Association and is vital to our success. Join today.
