The PNA’s Home and Garden Tour takes place Sunday, June 7, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Sponsored by Northwest Homecrafters, Peoples Bank, Swansons Nursery and ecohaus, the event features five remodeled homes and five urban gardens in the Phinney/Greenwood neighborhood. This year’s homes showcase a variety of housing styles and projects including raising a home for a daylight basement, starting from scratch on the inside and second story additions. The gardens include water features, patios and a garden in which over 3,800 square feet of ivy and 500 square feet of lawn were replaced with terraced planting beds.

The tour is self-guided and you can view the homes and gardens by walking, biking or driving (keep in mind that parking may be difficult). Slip-on footwear is recommended as participants must remove their shoes before entering each house.

Tickets cost $12 for PNA members or $15 for the general public and are available online or at the Phinney Neighborhood Center after June 3.

Babes-in-arms are free, but tickets for children ages 2-12 cost $5. The ticket brochure includes a map, addresses and a brief description of each home or garden.

The Tour also includes a Home and Garden Art Show/Sale at the Center. For a sneak peak at the gardens, home exteriors, the Home and Garden Art sale artists and for links to our sponsor websites, visit the tour's web page.

Volunteers are still needed to “house or garden sit” for three-hour shifts. This is a fun volunteer activity to do with a friend, and each volunteer receives a free ticket for the Tour. For information or to volunteer, call (206) 783-2244 or email Mary Lee Newman.

Community Celebration

Jugglers and bubbles and aerialists – oh my! Come celebrate the Phinney Neighborhood Center on June 28 from 2-4 p.m. and enjoy music, games and carnival activities including jugglers, face painters, chalk art, the Bubble Man and, yes, aerialists from Versatile Arts.

Earlier this year, the Phinney Neighborhood Association – and the neighborhood – became the official owner of the Phinney Neighborhood Center and now it’s time to celebrate.

The Mayor, City Council President, School Board President and State Representatives have all been invited but the really honored guests will be the community. Come enjoy YOUR community center.

The fun starts in the Center’s upper parking lot at 2 p.m. with music, chalk art, jugglers, the Bubble Man, aerialists and more.

At 3 p.m., we’ll have a short program with our local dignitaries and music from the Phinney Community Chorus, then it’s time for refreshments. Historic photos and materials detailing our plans for the future, including elevators and new entries for both building and an urban green space on the hillside will be on display.

And don’t worry, if the weather won’t cooperate, we’ll move what we can indoors and set up games and other activities. Rain can’t stop this party!

We’re looking for volunteers to help with set up and clean up, as well as to run the popcorn booth, supervise the chalk art and serve the cake. Interested? Contact Ann Bowden at (206) 783-2244.

Moulin Rouge Wrap-up

This year’s auction was a terrific party and a fabulous success! Thanks to the generosity and support of our sponsors, donors, volunteers and participants, the auction grossed over $89,000 including $5,400 from the dessert auction alone (kudos to the dessert makers and bidders). This year’s fund-an-item for a portable sound system and updated lighting fixtures raised $8,000! All proceeds from the auction benefit PNA programs and activities. The success of the auction would not have been possible without the help of the following: Sponsors who provide financial and in-kind-support - Gary’s Games & Hobbies, Woodland Park Zoo, Ron & Robyn Lewis, Jan Gray & Kerry Fowler, NRG::Seattle, Ken’s Market, Red Mill Burgers, PNA Board of Directors and Allegra Print & Imaging; Auctioneer Jerry Toner, who raised bidding fervor … and dollars; Caterer Bacchus & Arianna, who prepared an incredible feast; Beverage Donors Maritime Pacific Brewery, Starbucks, Susan & Glenn Beebe and The Vineyard Wine Shop; Photographers Hitomi and Joel Dames; Donors who provided amazing items and services; Graphic Designer Sarah Watson Designs for the fantastic invitation and print design; Decorations Diva Lisa Crabtree and Acquisitions Specialist Greg Trudeau; enthusiastic Bidders who attended the event; and, last but not least, the Auction Committee and all of the Volunteers who provided the talent and critical energy necessary to make the auction such a success! Merci beaucoup! To view a slideshow of photos from the auction, visit the PNA’s web site.

Thank You Volunteers!

A big thanks goes to George Suriya for organizing a wonderful group of neighbors and members of Mars Hill Church to give Heart of Phinney Park a make-over for its 10-year birthday. A donation from the church enabled us to purchase many plants to replace ones that have suffered damage or died over the years.

Volunteers transplanted numerous specimens, got new plants into the ground, spread a load of mulch, and completed various springtime clean-up tasks. If you'd like to help keep things green and growing, contact Judith Wood to join the ranks of independent volunteer gardeners known as Pacemakers. We'd love to have your help.

It Takes a Village

The phrase “it takes a village …” has been given new meaning by groups all over the country who are developing programs/organizations to assist people to stay longer in their homes as they age. The basic idea is that, for an annual fee, members have access to a support system of service providers and volunteers to help with daily living needs. These may include rides, medical and other advocacy, shopping and cooking services, assisted living services, etc.

The PNA is exploring this program concept as a new level of membership. Since each village is unique, we would like to begin with an informational gathering of people who might be interested in finding out more about this concept and possibly help to shape what the “Northwest Village” might be.

Our first meeting will be facilitated by PNA Executive Director Ed Medeiros at the Greenwood Senior Center, 525 N 85th, on June 25 at 7 p.m.

PNA Kids! Summer Art Camp

PNA Kids! has added another summer camp! We will offer for the first time an art camp for 2nd to 8th graders to be held in the Art Room at Whittier Elementary. We have gathered an excellent group of very creative instructors who are excited to be working with kids. For more information, visit the center to pick up a brochure or download a copy (PDF).

High school and college volunteers help with Summer Safari activities and field trips, committing to at least one full week (Monday-Friday) from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. This year we will be offering summer programs both at the Phinney Neighborhood Center and Whittier Elementary School. Preschool Assistants are also needed at Whittier Kids! on a more flexible morning schedule. Contact Judith for volunteer application and orientation information.

Phinney Farmers Market

Summer must be on the way, because the Phinney Farmers Market season opened on Friday, May 29! Please plan to shop the array of fresh fruits and vegetables, along with other delicious items including baked goods, pastas, honey, cheese, jam, and more. As always there will be ready-to-eat choices and entertainment to be enjoyed while you visit with friends and neighbors. Be sure to stop by the PNA table to learn about upcoming classes and events and pick up a Market Passport for the youngest shoppers in your group. While you're there, check out the shopping bags and t-shirts featuring a new design by PNA member Sandy Nelson.

Remaining shirts from 2007 and 2008 will be selling at a discount, so please help us clear out our old stock. We're also looking for one or two more volunteers to represent the PNA on Fridays from 4:45-7:15 p.m. Contact Judith or call (206) 783-2244 if you'd like to be a PNA Ambassador.

Community Dinner at the GSC

At the beginning of March the Greenwood SAGE Project, in partnership with Awake Church, hosted a community dinner at the Greenwood Senior Center for residents of Phinney/Greenwood and families and individuals living in motels along the Aurora corridor. A group of volunteers and guests from all over the community came together to enjoy a warm meal and live entertainment, bridging communities and fostering fellowship between neighbors who might not otherwise interact. A second dinner is in the works for Monday, June 15 at 6:30 p.m., and all are welcome. Call Jenny McIntosh at (206) 297-0875 to RSVP for the dinner or to sign up to volunteer.

BUILDING COMMUNITY IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD

Strong vibrant neighborhoods don’t just happen. They’re the result of years of hard work and effort. Since 1980, the Phinney Neighborhood Association has invested time and money in building and strengthening our neighborhood by providing and promoting a variety of programs and activities aimed at connecting neighbors and fostering involvement in our community.

Over the years, thousands of neighbors, near and far, have joined in these efforts creating a unique neighborhood center that is home to countless events, classes, community meetings, preschool and childcare resources, a tool lending library, soup kitchens, a senior center and an art gallery.
Make an investment in the future of your neighborhood. Membership forms the cornerstone of the Association and is vital to our success. Join today.
