PNPC Dragon Room Summer Program 2010 What is it?
Open to PNPC families and community members, the Dragon Room Summer Program offers rich and diverse classes for preschoolers and elementary aged children. For Phinney Neighborhood Association (PNA) Membership information, click here. The classes are drop-off so do not require parental involvement, but you are always welcome to stay for all or part of the class to explore along with your children. Online Registration & Forms

HANDS ON ARTS & CRAFTS with Sam Spencer Creative fun and sensory exploration! If your kid likes to get messy and explore and experiment with art, then this camp is for you! Glue and glitter, foam and paint–they will have projects to bring home and experiences to remember. We will be inside and out, working large scale and small–taking detailed care and being explosively impressionistic. If you've ever dropped your child off at Play Group at the Phinney Center, or Dragon Room Date Night, you know how much fun your child has had with Sam Spencer. Sam is a PNPC Parent, Artist and coordinator of Date Night in the Dragon Room and Playgroup. June 21-June 25

MAMA GORDITO'S SPANISH FIESTA with Martha Escobar de Breslauer Immerse your child in Spanish this summer, while he or she creates a fiesta! Through song, dance, crafts and words your child will learn and practice many useful Spanish phrases while enjoying the arts of Latin American culture. Taught by an experienced teacher and native Spanish speaker, Martha Escobar de Breslauer. Each student will work with other students to create a fiesta on the last day of class, which their parents will be invited to enjoy! July 5-8 (4 days), MORNING Session: 9:30 am-12:00 pm Ages 4-8 SUMMER READING FUN in Japanese with Mai Takahashi DeBlieck Summer is a great time to learn Japanese! During this one-week immersion class, students will be exposed to the Japanese language and culture through crafts, games, songs, cooking, and creative activities. We will especially focus on Hiragana letters and play a lot of games to learn them. Mai Takahashi DeBlieck is a PNPC co-op mom who also teaches immersion Japanese for children at the PNA and is a Japanese storyteller at Ravenna Third Place Books through Polly-Glot Tots. July 5-8 (4 days) Ages 5-8 SCIENCE CAMP with Lisa Storch Goldberg Join us as we have fun learning about science through experiments, art,
stories and movement. We’ll explore different science concepts by learning how
rainbows are made (diffraction), what happens when solids turn to liquid
(melting point), what makes a volcano explode or muffins rise (gas formation)
and much more! Lisa has a Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry, is a PNPC Parent and
Playgroup Sitter. Please bring a snack and water bottle. Ages 3-5 TOTALLY FUN YOGA with Wendy Cunningham This yoga class incorporates poses and movement while traveling on imaginative journeys by utilizing themes, music, stories, art, games, and relaxation. We will focus on fun, play, and movement while introducing forms of yoga. Definitely not your average yoga class! (Note: Session #2 focuses more on postures, breathing, and relaxation, as well as group and partner poses.) The instructor, Wendy Cunningham has her BS in exercise science and currently holds her 200 Hour Yoga Alliance certification and children's yoga certifications from Radiant Child Yoga Program (RCYP1 & 2) and Mini Yogis in Los Angeles. She is the owner and director of Bizzy Bodies Yoga and is also a Washington state certified PE and Health teacher. July 19-23 Ages: 3+ MINI-CAMPS FOR MINI-PEOPLE with Laura Genoves Fill up those long, napless summer afternoons with mini camps! Children 2-5 are welcome to sign up for different sessions offered throughout the week. We will provide a daily theme and activities to keep children happy and entertained. Monday -Train Camp, Tuesday- Princess and Knight Camp, Wednesday -Hawaii Camp, Thursday – Dinosaur Camp, Friday – Water, water everywhere! July 19, 20, 21, 22 and/or 23 (5 SEPARATE days) *There is a separate REGISTRATION

FRENCH LANGUAGE CAMP
with Tanya
Knudsen DDoes your child have French comprehension? Are you interested
in reading and practicing with them at home? Join us for French language camp
where will introduce your children to two book series: Popi and Petit Ours Brun.
Games, music and arts and crafts activities will bring these French favorites to
life during camp and when you practice at home. Books will be available to use
in class. They are also available for subscription and loan at the Alliance
Francaise in Seattle. (French knowledge desired.) Your child will enjoy
French with Tanya, the Founder and French Instructor for POLLY-GLOT TOTS and a
PNPC mom! July 26- July 30

GUNKY GOOP (SCIENCE SOUP)
with
Trina Willard Remember when you were a kid and you made those strange
concoctions in a big bowl with everything you could find? Well now it's
your kid’s turn and what an opportunity to do it with Trina, our very own PreK
teacher! Let your kids use their imaginations while mixing real
ingredients to make strange concoctions and sensory experiments. This week
of gunky goop (science soup) is filled with Slime, goop, gak, dough, paste and
other messy pleasures. Dress for mess, bring a snack and a water bottle! Ages 4-7 (kids who are turning 4 over summer are okay
if Pre-K ready)
CAMP ALOHA with
Laura
Genoves Back for a third year of fabulous Hawaiian fun! Join our
ohana (family) for a week of hands-on learning about the 50th state, HAWAII. ‘
Auntie Laura’, a Hawaii native, and her two middle school sons will share the
history, culture, and traditions of the 50th state through exciting games,
songs, stories and activities. Weekly activities include ukulele strumming, hula
dancing, interactive projects such as building a volcano and creating art with
real Hawaiian sand! Our last day of camp culminates with a mini-luau for
families with entertainment and samples of traditional Hawaiian foods such as
poi and haupia (coconut pudding). Hele on! August 2-6 Ages 3-6

NEW CAMP! AROUND THE
WORLD IN 5 DAYS with
Laura Genoves This summer, come on a round-the-world voyage with teacher
Laura, in our magical airplane. You'll explore the African Continent, learn
about the various Asian cultures and make “sushi”, hop with kangaroos down
under, travel on a royal tour of Europe, sample French bread and cheese and
create wire sculptures. Learn to say 'hello' in Swahili, and so much more!
Join other international explorers for a week, have your Dragon Room
passport stamped on five different continents, and capture your memories
with a variety of fabulous take-home projects. August 2-6 Ages 3-5
CREATIVE DRAMA: The Wizard, the Dragon, the Rabbit and the Fairies Come join the wizard, the dragon, the rabbit and the fairies
on their adventures around the world! Each day we will work together as
characters to solve a different problem, experiencing creative drama, music,
dance, poetry, storytelling, puppetry and costume design along the way.
Instructor Meredith Berlin is a professional theatre artist working at Seattle
Children's Theatre, where she has led the multi-arts preschool program C.A.S.T.
for the past six years. August 9 – Aug 12 (4 days) Snack will be provided. Ages 3.5-5.5
KIDS IN THE KITCHEN
with

McGrady Kids love to be in the kitchen! Feeling the
food...creating yummy things to eat...just being a part of the process.
Let Jeanne McGrady, PNPC Mom and PNPC AS Chair, help your little ones explore
their way through kitchen. We will be cooking breakfast, lunch, dinner,
dessert and snacks (so clearly no snacks from home are needed - we'll be eating
our own creations! Just bring your own water bottle). Skills
kids will also learn while we cook: kitchen safety, cracking and whisking eggs,
slicing, stirring, flipping, kneading, baking and of course EATING! Each
child will receive an apron and recipe book of the dishes they made! Come
and join the KIDS IN THE KITCHEN! August 16-20
Ages 4-6 PLEASE NOTE: due
to so many food allergies that are "out there" (I have even have my own!) - Kids
in the Kitchen summer camp will NOT be a food allergy free camp
(materials and planning are completed prior to registration so I will have no
way of knowing potential allergies). I am happy to have kids with allergies in
my camp if they know what they can and cannot eat (and I am aware of the
allergy) and if handling foods that contain something they cannot eat is okay.
DIRT CAMP
with
Trina Willard Kids LOVE dirt. Period. Come join Trina (our very
own PreK Teacher!) in the garden to explore all the ways you can have fun with
dirt. There will be mud pies, seeds, gardening/growing things, water play
and much more! Trina, an experienced gardener, will have your kids getting
dirty and wet every day - so dress for mess (and possibly bring a spare outfit).
Please have your child bring a snack and water bottle! Aug 23 - Aug 27 (5 days) Ages 4-7 (kids who are turning 4 over summer are okay
