Business Spotlight: The Grinning Yogi
“Life is complicated. Your yoga studio shouldn’t be.”
With so many places to exercise and practice yoga in Seattle, how do you differentiate and find the place that fits you? One option that is nestled into our wonderful Phinney-Greenwood community is The Grinning Yogi.
The Grinning Yogi was founded by Jamie Silverstein in 2012 with a simple mission: “to celebrate you, as you are, today”. Fed up with the marketing of ‘not enough’ so rampant in the fitness world, Jamie espouses the power of acceptance, compassion and self-love.
Grinning started as a rebellion to classic fitness communities, encouraging people to accept and appreciate themselves as they are and not that they need to fix parts of themselves through exercise.
Jamie chose the name because “Life is complicated. Your yoga studio shouldn’t be. We can practice seriously while at the same time learn to take ourselves lightly=We are real people making real good yoga.”
There are subtle differences between their two Seattle studios. Their original Capitol Hill location is almost seven years old and still has a lot of the homemade-charm. “Classes there are sweaty, fun and full of energy”. The Greenwood location is more family-oriented, with childcare and more opportunities for connection.
Most of all, Jamie and The Grinning Yogi staff are looking to continue to build community, promote self-appreciation and love, and make sure that everyone who comes through their doors feels good and their body and seen.
