The 13th Amendment abolishing slavery was ratified on December 6, 1865. Nonetheless, beginning with the end of Reconstruction in 1877, the Southern states established laws and practices that kept black people in a condition of servitude that was slavery in all but name. This course, “Jim Crow in the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries,” describes the reality of life for black people beginning in the post-Reconstruction period up to the 1964 and 1965 Civil Rights Acts – and beyond. It is a very painful story.
There is no textbook; the instructor will provide a course packet with all the readings. The reading for the first week will be sent out as an email attachment as you register for the course.
The remaining readings will be available for purchase beginning the first week of class. Must register: 206.297.0875.
