An event every week that begins at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, repeating until Wednesday November 6, 2019
8-week seminar, Wednesdays, 7-8:30, Sept 18-Nov 6
Explore the true history of slavery and reconstruction that you never learned in school.
Race relations is one of the most important issues confronting both our nation and each of us as individuals. Discussions around this topic can be fraught with dangers, especially when white people do not understand the reality of slavery and Reconstruction as it was experienced by black people at the time, and how those experiences continue to shape the collective consciousness of the black community. One of the reasons for this disconnect is that most of what we learned in school about slavery and Reconstruction was superficial at best, and intentionally false in most cases.
In this course, we will discuss four key chapters each from two readily available, award-winning books with the latest and most comprehensive scholarship on slavery and Reconstruction, thereby giving us the knowledge we need to intelligently engage in discussions of race relations.
