March 11 COVID-19 Update: Whittier Kids Closure

Ana Maria KingBy ana-maria

Today, the Seattle Public Schools announced closure for all school building activities beginning tomorrow, Thursday, March 12.  All school day instruction, childcare, preschool, athletics/sports, health services, enrichment, etc. are canceled until further notice for a minimum of 14 calendar days.

Due to the operating agreement between Seattle Public Schools and the Phinney Neighborhood Association (PNA), programming at Whittier Kids will close in concurrence with the Whittier Elementary School. Whittier Kids programming includes the Preschool and the Before- and After-School Program.

CHANGES TO PNA OPERATIONS

  • Following the guideline issued by the Seattle Public Schools, Whittier Kids Preschool and Before- and After-school programs will close beginning tomorrow, Thursday, March 12, for at least 14 calendar days and until further notice.
  • All other PNA facilities will continue operations at this time. This includes the Phinney Center’s main campus and the Greenwood Senior Center (GSC).
  • Beginning Thursday, March 12, The GSC will operate under reduced hours, opening at 9:30 am and closing at 3 pm. Please contact the GSC directly at 206.297.0875 to find out if specific classes and programs are affected (see list as of 3/11).
  • PNA-affiliated preschool co-ops will continue operations. Each school will independently announce closure if determined necessary.

The PNA will make every effort for every facility to remain open and operational. We are deeply mindful of the health and well-being of our community, especially the people at higher risk of severe illness.  At the same time, PNA understands the critical nature of staying open to support our senior community and their families, and we will make every effort to remain open.

While the Greenwood Senior Center (GSC) will be reducing open hours for participants beginning tomorrow, GSC will continue to be staffed on weekdays from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. We will continue to provide support group programming and offer daily lunches to our participants. At this time, GSC is offering daily lunches to be eaten in the cafe or be taken in a to-go box. GSC may update this offering option as needed. Again, please contact the Greenwood Senior Center directly at 206.297.0875 on the availability of specific services, classes, events, and programs. (See list as of 3/11.)

As announced yesterday, we have canceled PNA events through March 31. We will continue to evaluate the events and activities scheduled after March 31 (including the April 25 Annual Auction), basing our decisions on public health authorities’ guidance and the circumstances.

As always, community health and well-being remain our top priority. Our staff is working hard to minimize disruption to services and keep the community calm and reassured while following our High Alert NPI protocols for communication, cleaning, gathering, and sharing materials.
