Map of participating venues     List of participating venues and featured artists

Originally a stand-alone annual event, the BIG One is now the centerpiece of the monthly Art Up Chow Down art walks. This year, the BIG One will feature work from over 150 area artists in 78 businesses in Phinney-Greenwood. Over the years, this hugely popular event has turned into a neighborhood party with musical performances in participating businesses and churches, street performers, chalk art and activities for children. Maps and additional information will be available online and at participating sites the week of the Art Walk.

The PhinneyWood Art Walk is organized by the Greenwood Arts Council, an all-volunteer organization, in collaboration with the Phinney Neighborhood Association. For additional information, contact the Arts Council by calling 206.783.2244 or email ann@phinneycenter.org.

NOTE: Because of their schedules, some businesses only participate on Friday. Artists are usually only present on Friday as well.

Artist(s)/Media: Peter Morrison, South America Biodiversity Expedition

Description:Peter Morrison, a conservation biologist and avid explorer of biodiversity and wildlands, has been exploring South America for 30 years and leading expeditions to biodiversity hotspots  for the last five years in an effort to map, describe and protect the world's largest remaining wild and roadless areas.

We will feature a large screen photo presentation of the Pacific Biodiversity Institute’s recent South America Biodiversity Expedition, portraying the vastness and beauty of the wildlands and their immense biodiversity. By characterizing these areas in terms of their irreplaceability, PBI hopes that this data will be key to their protection. In addition, a few identification photos of the PBI Harbor Porpoise Project, located here in the Puget Sound, will also be presented. Wine and light refreshments provided. Anyone who wants to donate to PBI”sSouth America Conservation Fund is welcome to make a contribution at the door.

Greenwood Urban Building
8421 Greenwood Ave N

Artists/Media:  UW Landscape Architecture students, posters and models
Description:  Envisioning Healthier Neighborhood Design:  Greenwood-Phinney.  This January-March BLA studio developed design visions for a healthier Greenwood-Phinney neighborhood which focus upon three interrelated systems:
•  movement – to support safe and appealing pedestrian and bicycle networks

•  civic – to engage diverse groups in shared play, learning and stewardship

•  ecological – to improve urban environmental conditions such as storm water, habitat, and urban agriculture.

Their design proposals focus on specific places within the neighborhood such as parks, and streets and alleys that connect schools and civic places, with ideas for potential greenways and mixed-use streets.  Ideas grew from community feedback at an initial meeting at the Greenwood Library and subsequent design review conversations at UW.

Members of the Greenwood-Phinney Greenways group will also participate.

Artist(s)/Media: Taylor McAtee, High Dynamic Range (HDR) Photography on Canvas; Dennis Lussier, Photography on Canvas; Joel Clarin, Film photography to Giclée prints on Canvas

Description:

Taylor McAtee has amassed quite the collection of urban and natural scenery from local landmarks to exotic vistas, all the while providing a viewpoint that is distinctly different and transports the viewer to another world.

Dennis Lussier: My passion in photography involves going places with my camera and finding a way to capture them that creates an emotional response.  Photography for me is a constantly moving journey, and right now in my life I hope to focus my photography on places and experiences in the outdoors.

Joel Clarin chooses to work with traditional film cameras, then creates traditional silver gelatin prints or Giclée prints on canvas. Joel tends to prefer black and white images, because it further abstracts the image from the actual space and time it was recorded. His subjects are 'landscapes' that attempt to find the grandeur within the 'ordinary' and often overlooked.

Artist(s)/Media:Lucia Enriquez

Description:Lucia Enriquez recently moved from encaustic to acrylic, building up opaque and translucent layers of medium and pigment that retain the feeling of melted wax. The resulting paintings are small, thick and intimate. They glow. The work is abstract, but suggestions of wing, heart, leaf, cloud forms emerge through the process of painting, the way that images emerge through dreams, meditation or prayer: like something glimpsed at the bottom of a pond. She writes: “The sources of my imagery--weather, maps, grids, scaffolding, anatomies, landscapes, calligraphy and wing forms—have connections to my personal history and way of looking at the world. In essence they are about longings, about emotional communications that I may or may not succeed in conveying, about creating intent based on the fragile landscape of dreams.”

Also, on Friday, May 9, from 7-9, there will be an open mic night at the church. (Performer sign-in begins at 6:15.) We welcome all performers, from spoken word to acoustic music.  Enjoy our wonderful acoustics in a venue without rattling glasses or talking during performances. There is a piano available for performers. This is a child-friendly place so no profanity, please. Come share your talents or enjoy the talents of others!

Artist(s)/Media: Pauline Smith

Description: Night Study - This series of seven photographs were taken between 2002 and 2008 using a Holga and a Pentax K1000. Equipped with a tripod and setting the exposure from fifteen seconds to several minutes, I have experimented with trying to find the best environment to capture an image. Full moon, new moon, clear sky or mist, each brings something different.  I still love the surprise of working with film.

Since 2000, I have taken my cameras to Paris, Mont Saint-Michel, Giverny, Aix-en-Provence, Nice, Eze, Istanbul, Santorini, Lisbon, the Algarve, Seville, Barcelona, Milan, Venice, Tuscany, Rome, Hong Kong, Macau, Puerto Vallarta, Sayulita, San Miguel de Allende, Salt Spring Island-B.C., across the U.S. and here at home in the Pacific Northwest.

I use the Holga for its inherent dream-like quality.  When I create an image I look for angles/curves, asymmetry/symmetry, light/shadow and texture.  I look to capture an otherwise missed moment.  I look for stillness.

Artist(s)/Media:Artist(s)/Media: Molly Starr Nelson, photography; Antonio Knoy, metalwork; Mylen Huggins , paintings; Kendra Crowe , mosaics

Description: Molly Starr Nelson specializes in Fine Art Photography, Fine Art Portraits, Artful Travel and Visual Storytelling for NGOs and non-profits. She has a BFA in Studio Arts and concentration in Fine Art Photography. Her Fine Art Photography often has an ethereal quality which is complimented by the Alternative Photography Processes she explores. She enjoys combining old processes with the new (digital photography).

Mylen Huggins enjoys creating art as well as teaching it to children. She will be displaying paintings from her Perspective collection. “The inspiration for Perspective presented itself to me one late afternoon a few years ago while driving home from my sons tennis practice:  There in front of me is a concrete triangular island that separates the road going West and East Green Lake Way North.  From my point of view, that concrete island presented such a dramatic visual perspective that struck me in a way that I couldn’t let go.  I could only translate the shape of that image into a thin line that comes in from one end, curves down, loop around, over a line and then out the other end.  The land forms represented by the ovals or ellipses, as they extend and overlap each other, and the translation and relationship of colors present more of a calming translation for me in contrast to what is actually going on out there in reality.”

Kendra Crowe utilizes scrap materials such as glass, rock, beads and shells to create her own “green” works of art!  Kendra’s work features traditional and sculptural mosaics which include everything from guitars to birdhouses.  All of her pieces are hand cut, giving each of them a perfectly imperfect appearance.

A Ballard sailor and knife sharpener for many years, AntonioKnoy is moving his studio to his backyard in Shoreline to work on his portfolio by commission.

Artist(s)/Media: Doris Mosler

Description: Rich color, unique forms, and layered textures continue to draw me into my collage experiments.  I am influenced by antique textiles and their generous use of patterned colors and designs reflecting natural shapes.  Collage and overprinting allow me to combine abstract elements with images derived from nature.  The overall harmony and composition of the final work are never known at the start of a piece.  All collaged pieces are printed and layered with overprinting to first create a varied ‘library’ of print materials.  These are then cut, reworked, combined and recombined to create a final composition. After attending workshops in monotype I knew I had found a medium that offered the versatility and spontaneity I love and that would satisfy my inner sense of adventure. When I’m working, the edge of what is ‘given’ and what is 'unknown' presents a unique space of aliveness, curiosity about outcome, and finally satisfaction that, for me, is rarely found in such potent and pleasurable form anywhere else in life.

Description: James Farrand is a Seattle-based artist who grew up surrounded by the rolling foothills of southern California’s San Gabriel Valley. Having studied Graphic Design & Illustration at Seattle Central Community College, and with a background in music as well, James’ paintings reflect the dramatic contrasts and fluid rhythms that have attracted him to so many art forms. Working primarily in watercolor, James employs techniques such as pouring, spraying, and glazing to create rich dark values while accentuating the pure-white of untouched watercolor paper. The intense color saturation of his work often has viewers suspiciously asking, “That’s a watercolor?” To which Jim responds, “Exactly!” His work can be seen on the walls of private owners and businesses alike.

Artist(s)/Media: Solace & John Osgood

Description:Solace draws his inspiration from his surroundings, the lush landscapes of the Pacific Northwest that are his home. Often using leaves or natural materials as stencils in his aerosol spray creations, he effortlessly mixes the urban with the wild. His friendly monsters and fanciful figures seem to have emerged from a Technicolor forest just next to the ones we know: where every mountainside sports a brilliant graffitied mural, and Sasquatch might skateboard over for dinner.

The bright, bold colors of nature infuse John Osgood’s angular abstracts, painted in acrylic on panel. Patterns and themes from nature seem to unfold like wings or feathers, and there is a coiled energy in each composition that seems to be constantly blooming and growing. In addition to his abstracted work, Osgood presents his trademark figurative style insects and sculpted birds.

My work has evolved into a impressionistic realistic style.  I love shapes and the light that gives them form.  My subjects range from landscapes and animal portraits to figurative and fancy shoes – anything that captures my imagination.  My goal is to be true to my subject and perhaps to give the viewer a smile.  I am so happy to have found my passion and have the support of my family and health to pursue it.
