About Phinneywood Holi Celebration

Holi is a Hindu spring festival that signifies the end of winter, the arrival of spring, the victory of good over evil, fertility, color, love, laughter, forgetting and forgiving.  Holi means “burning” in Hindi. Holi is a two-day festival – Holika Dahan and Holi with colors.

Holi is a time when friends, families, and communities come together to celebrate the victory of the dissolution of bad spirits, burning of bad karma and bad feelings, removing negative thoughts and cleansing our consciousness.

So let’s start throwing colors on each other because “Boora Na Mano Holi Hai!”

Volunteer at Holi

Event Features

  • Powder throwing area ($7-15, children age 2 and under are free. Advance tickets recommended, there may be tickets available at the door.)
  • Dance to a blend of Bollywood, Bhangra, & EDM by DJ KP
  • Spice Walla restaurant will be serving delicious Kathi Rolls
  • Enjoy Nepalese made from scratch dumplings and appetizers from Kathmandu Momocha
  • At 2PM Afsaana Dance will showcase their unique style of Hindi Film Dance (Bollywood!)
  • Children’s arts & crafts with Hindi Time Kids ($10-30)

Fine print…

  • Dress– Wear something comfortable and bring layers for cold. Wear glasses or goggles to protect your eyes. Wear a mask if you are concerned about breathing in powder. Wear something that you are willing to ruin. Colors are messy and may stain. If you want an event souvenir, wear a white t-shirt and later soak it in vinegar to fix the color.
  • Additional color packets will be available for purchase. 
  • Food– will be available for purchase from vendors. 
  • Restrooms– Port-a-potties will be available, anyone with color powder on their body will not be allowed in the building.
  • Parking– Limited on-site free parking is available, and  in the neighborhood. Carpooling encouraged! Please be considerate of neighbor’s driveways when parking.
  • Outside items – Please do not bring outside color, paint ball guns, water guns, and water balloons. Pets are not allowed.
  • Food & Drink – Food vendors will be on site, and there will be water available. No outside food or alcohol is allowed at this family-friendly event. Refillable water bottles are OK.
  • Clean up – Colors are cornstarch-based and safe natural colors. No water will be available at the event for washing up, but soap and water at home will remove the powder. We recommend and wearing eye protection. Bring a garbage bag or towel to protect your car on the way home.

Learn More About Holi

Last March, on a gorgeous, warm day, the sky over Phinney was, yes, blue. But it was also yellow, green, orange, and pink.
Avanie Trovato, a community member, initiated the Phinney Neighborhood Association’s hosting of the Hindu spring festival, Holi, in Seattle. Inspired by her childhood experiences in India, she aimed to bring cultural diversity to her local community. With PNA’s support, the festival became a success, emphasizing the importance of shared food and celebrations in fostering community connections. Avanie believes in breaking cultural barriers and creating a space for dialogue, laughter, and understanding, not just during Holi but throughout the year. The upcoming Holi celebration represents a broader effort to enhance equity, diversity, and inclusion within the community.
