The Phinney Center Gallery will once again be filled with art as the Emerald City Art Club presents The Awareness Show, 2021. Produced in partnership with Phinney Neighborhood Association (PNA), the show will be on display for the PhinneyWood BIG Art Walk on Sept. 10 and 11.
Each of 20 local artists in the show has interpreted the theme socially, politically, spiritually, humorously, poetically, or any other way they wished—a challenge that resulted in a wide variety of work. The show will remain up until Sept. 30 and can be viewed during Phinney Center’s regular hours: Monday-Friday, 9 am-5 pm.
The opening reception for the show will take place during the BIG One Art Walk on Sept. 10, 5-9 pm. At around 7 pm, visitors can participate in a Vincent Van Gogh paint-off contest. Contestants will get 20 minutes to paint their version of a Van Gogh painting, and their works will be judged by a local professional artist. Details are available at EmeraldCityArtClub.com, and no experience is necessary. (The ECAC says, “Don’t be shy, folks. The bar is really low on this.”)
Emerald City Art Club (ECAC) was established in 2011 and members show their artwork around Seattle and the Northwest region. They also participate in art educational activities. Members include professional artists, semi-pros, and committed hobbyists who are dedicated to making art and building a community of artistic friends.
Director of ECAC Patrick Howe explains, “The club grew out of my painting classes. One day, I realized that some of my students were painting so well that I thought I should find places for them to show their artwork.
“First, I had them show in my art gallery that I had in Eastlake. It was a blast to see them so thrilled to be showing their artwork in a real art gallery. Then later, with the help of member artist Kathy L. Kimball, we found places in offices buildings and coffee shops for club members to show their artwork. “As time went on, more experienced and professional artists began joining the club. So now there is a great cross-mix of amateurs, semi-pros, and professional artists in the club. But the glue that really sticks the club together is the sense of community.
“In addition to our art shows, we visit museums and galleries and have potlucks. We laugh together and have friendly debates about anything to do with art. The Awareness Show 2021 will be on view for only 16 days, so I hope a lot of people can get over to the Phinney Center to see it.”
